MSD confirmed its USD 10 billion acquisition of Verona Pharma on 9 July, gaining chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) therapy Ohtuvayre (ensifentrine) – the first dual PDE3/PDE4 inhibitor with bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory effects. Approved in the US market in June 2024 for COPD maintenance, Ohtuvayre represents the first novel inhaled mechanism in over two decades for the condition.
MSD CEO Robert M. Davis highlighted the drug's potential to address unmet needs in COPD, which affects 16 million people in the company's US homeland. Verona is also evaluating Ohtuvayre for non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis and asthma. The acquisition strengthens MSD's cardiopulmonary portfolio following recent launches in pulmonary arterial hypertension.
