Eli Lilly has signed a generative-AI and LNP delivery collaboration with China's METiS TechBio, described as the largest global deal centred on an AI-driven extrahepatic lipid nanoparticle (LNP) platform, with a low-eight-figure upfront, up to USD 1.1 billion in development, regulatory and commercial milestones and single-digit percentage royalties on annual net sales.
Rather than a simple hand-off, the partners will use METiS's NanoForge-driven AiLNP platform to discover and optimise ionisable lipids and tissue-specific LNP structures, aiming to move delivery science from organ-level enrichment to tissue and cell-level targeting across multiple therapeutic modalities.
The strategic significance sits below the dollar figures. Lilly has already acquired Orna Therapeutics and partnered Amplitude to access circular RNA, trans-amplifying RNA and in vivo CAR-T payloads, but those deals lean on payload innovation with LNP as a supporting vehicle; METiS instead supplies the delivery base layer. Its AiLNP stack combines a tens-of-million-scale ionisable lipid library, lipid language models, multi-scale LNP simulation, toxicity and QSAR models and high-throughput non-human-primate DNA-barcoding evaluation, and has already produced cardiac-targeting and T-cell-targeting LNPs with markedly improved specificity.
